Osh, city,southwestern Kyrgyzstan. The city lies at an elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000metres) on the Akbura River where it emerges from the Alay foothills. Firstmentioned in writings of the 9th century, it was destroyed by the Mongols inthe 13th century and subsequently rebuilt. In the 15th century, before the searoutes were discovered, it was an important post on the trade routes to Chinaand India. Now it has a variety of industrial undertakings, including silk andcotton textile production and food processing, and is the starting point of theOsh-Khorugh road, the main Pamirs highway. The city has a teacher-traininginstitute, a branch of the Bishkek Polytechnic Institute, a theatre, a museum,and a botanical garden. Mount Sulaiman, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritagesite, is located in the western part of the city and has long been a place ofMuslim pilgrimage. The sacred mountain shelters numerous sites of worship amongits five peaks, including two reconstructed 16th-century mosques; sacred sitesare connected to one another by footpaths. In the18th century it became part of the khanate of Kokand, and in 1876 Andijon wascaptured by the Russians. In 1898 it was the scene of an abortive nativerebellion against tsarist rule.
